How to remove unwanted Markdown from copied AI text

You copy a response from ChatGPT or another AI assistant, paste it somewhere else and suddenly see characters such as `##`, `**` or list markers in the text. That is often Markdown: a lightweight way of representing formatting in plain text.

Why Markdown appears in AI responses

Markdown is a convenient format for text generators because it can express headings, emphasis, links, lists and tables without requiring a full document editor. The symbols can become visible when the destination application does not render Markdown automatically.

Common Markdown formatting

`# Heading` represents a heading. `**bold**` represents bold text. Hyphens can indicate lists, while backticks are used for code. These symbols are useful when interpreted correctly but may be distracting when pasted as literal text.

Choose whether you want plain or formatted text

Removing every Markdown marker is not always the best solution. If the content includes important headings or lists, you may want to preserve their structure in a formatted document. If you are pasting a short message into a plain-text field, a simpler version may be more appropriate.

Clean the text before reusing it

  1. Copy the AI response.
  2. Open the FixMyAI text editor.
  3. Review visible Markdown and the formatted preview.
  4. Edit or remove unwanted markers using the available editor controls.
  5. Copy or export the finished text using the available functionality.

Avoid damaging code and technical content

Not every Markdown-looking character should be removed. Backticks, underscores and symbols can be meaningful in code, formulas and technical notes. Inspect the output before making broad changes.
